Social Media is Finally Catching On

Yes, I'm joking.  You may have heard me and thousands of others talking about the benefits of social media over the last few years.  Well, now it has become very interesting.  There have been some major shifts in the world of social media in just the last few weeks.

First, Google announced Google+ on June 28th.  The results haven't been too bad, they have only added 10 million users in just a few weeks!

Now, rumors are that Microsoft is jumping into the game.   Stay tuned...

 

Survey Says LinkedIn Still #1 with Accounting Professionals

Our 2010 survey found that LinkedIn was the most popular social media site among accounting professionals.  This year, the participants in our 2011 survey are saying the same thing!  Early results show that almost 90% of accounting professionals are using LinkedIn while just short of 80% are using Facebook.

Are you missing out on Twitter?

Is your firm using Twitter? This graph comes from our 2010 social networking survey and shows that most firms are not planning to use Twitter during the next year.

According to Business 101: Getting Started on Twitter, "you can use Twitter to spread news about your company or products, engage in conversations, gather feedback from your customers, and share the inside scoop about your business in real time."

Check out how the Journal of Accountancy is using Twitter to provide the accounting profession with daily updates and breaking news. They are providing links to items that appear on their website as well as retweeting news from other sources.

Do you have clients that would like daily updates about the news in their industry? Would it help if your firm was considered to be the expert in their industry? If so, you should consider using Twitter to provide information to your clients and to help promote your brand!

What's Ahead?

Ever wonder what the next big thing will be within the world of social media? The answer might be Path, a new social network that launched in November.

According to their blog, "Path is the personal network. A place to be yourself and share life with close friends and family. The personal network doesn’t replace your existing social networks – it augments them. "

So, what's so new or exciting about Path? Path will limit your network to only 50 friends! The idea is that you will be willing to share greater details of your life with a smaller group of friends.

Why 50? It is based upon research from Robin Dunbar, an Oxford Professor of Evolutionary Psychology. See this pcmag.com post for a detailed explanation.
